Thank you notes
Sending a thank you note after an interview is extremely important for several reasons. In addition to being a courteous gesture, it provides another opportunity to sell yourself and cover any areas that you feel weren’t adequately covered in the interview. It also gives you the chance to address any objections the employer might have raised as to your candidacy.
After a company visit where you have interviewed with more than one person, it is a good idea to send a thank you note to each individual who interviewed you. This means you must get the names and titles of everyone who interviewed you. (This is where requesting a business card from your interviewer(s) comes in handy.)
Always send you thank you notes one to two days after your interview. Although it is acceptable to hand-write them, it is more professional to type them. A well-written thank you note is a golden opportunity to leave a positive impression long after the interview has ended — don’t pass it up!
The suggested format for your thank you note is as follows:
- Thank the employer for his or her time, letting the interviewer know how much you enjoyed meeting with him or her.
- Identify the specific position for which you interviewed and the date/place of the interview.
- Mention a key point of your conversation with the interviewer. When writing letters to multiple interviewers, differentiate your letters by referring to something specific you learned from the interviewer.
- Express enthusiasm for the job/company, and reiterate why you fit well with the organization. This is a good time to mention your previous experience and/or accomplishments.
Indicate that you look forward to possibility of becoming a member of that organization.
